Awesomely strange and oddly coherent genrebang sound collage from Russia; all over the place musically, from electronica and supersonic Slavic rap to death metal riffs to rock, pop and punk.

This release is from 2005 and no longer seems to be available, but you can get their other stuff here, or through their label.

Compilation album of Japanese weirdness produced by Steve Albini, who also fronts for Zeni Geva & Superunit (which if I'm not wrong is also him and Zeni Geva) on both editions.

Really good stuff all around with no duds and a few gems; definitely check out Maria Kannon, the dramatic and odd rock act (song titles: Die Like a Dog--that is to die meaninglessly or stupidly--and Village Where We Eat Each Other) which provides the track 3s.

BAD SUN RISING I & 2

Finnish Genius

The heart of the New Wave Of Finnish Heavy Metal (also see Pharaoh Overlord & the superb Steel Mammoth), Circle sound different on every release of theirs I've heard. On this one blown-out electronics hum and ambient blips segue into glitch-shot, raging 80s-ish (check the bleak apocalyptic cover) hardcore punk and then back again over the course of 11 tracks; as always, Circle's take on a genre is weird and very enjoyable.

(due to my neanderthal-like incomprehension of moviemaker, the video is 1:00 longer than the actual song.)

From 2005, this was the first release by this difficult to pigeonhole, genre-bending Belgian duo (guitar/vocals/synth + drums/vocals). Interesting and catchy stuff.




P.S. Let me know if you agree that the vocal line on 'Share A Lot' sounds a whole lot like 'Smooth Criminal'.

Land of the Rising Noise : Volumes I - III

3 compilations of Japanese noise and experimental rock from Charnel Records, released in '93, '97, and '99 respectively.

The main common denominator here is weirdness of one sort or another, with tempo, volume, instrumental selection and mood varying pretty widely.
There are probably some things on here you recognize and some you don't, and some things you'll like and some you won't (all of which is more or less the whole point of comps as far as I'm concerned).

Yet another comp of 90's Japanese underground stuff, mostly noise, electronics and psychedelia. Gaji & Ruins provide my two favorites off this comp, but there's a bunch of good stuff, with the notable exception of track 4, which made me want to punch hippies (my threshold for wanting to punch hippies is fairly low however, so you may not have the same problem).

This is probably the most experimental of the "experimental" comps I've posted so far and there is some odd and interesting music on here.

Dead Tech I

1986 release. This was a compilation of experimental Japanese rock and noise put out on German label Dossier. The ubiquitous K.K. Null makes an appearance with a noise track, and the Boredoms perform as a duo while Ruins do their whacky, also 2-man thing. The other artists are less familiar, but the first three give you an idea of the ballpark they're in.

V.A. : From Koenji To Eternity

A mid-nineties snapshot of Japanese underground experimental stoner, noise and punk from Inoxia.

The most famous name on here is Boris, who deliver 3 minutes of ambient sound w/ creepy narration plus two minutes of hardcore on their track. Konk&Null (more or less Zeni Geva) have two tracks of their odd noise/industrial rock. The other bands on hear are less famous, and some only seem to have this release to their names.




OAC, who also contributed to Bacteria Sour II, have three songs of fairly straightforward punk. Gaji's, Kirihito's & Mustard Masturbation's songs are oddball spaced-out rock experiments.

All in all an interesting variety, with a few standout songs.

From Koenji To Eternity

Smohalla : Smolensk Combustion & Nova Persei

Experimental French black metal, with an emphasis on the genre's atmosphere rather than harshness. Weirdly melodic, filled with odd effects and chants. Nova Persei is based on a H.P. Lovecraft story (Beyond The Wall Of Sleep)-- and there's definitely nothing wrong with that.
