Foojitsu : Streamline English

Don't know too much background at all about this Russian band, except that I think they share members with the previously posted USSSY / Kruzer Ken and maybe also WJW.

Anyway, on this (2002) album, Foojitsu were playing some kind of noise rock/hard-core/electronic admixture (later releases are more or less straight up noise rock), long on eclectic, short songs, blasts of guitar noise, electronic effects & spoken world samples. Mostly on the noisier side of things despite the somewhat poppy tune below.

DHR released (but nonetheless slow) german 'rap'/noisy electronics from '99. Weird fractured rhythms and odd FX (and surprisingly anticipatory of later grime stuff). Grew on me:

TOO BAD BUT TRUE

Wrench

Wrench have been around since 1992, playing various combinations of hardcore, electronica and industrial groove. They've always been a bit of a hit-or miss band for me; I like some of their songs but find others rather meh. Anyway, the main reason I'm posting this is because the second track contains guest-vocals from one of my favorite young Japanese actors, Tadanobu Asano, star of the brilliant Ichi the Killer (above pic) among other things.





DRUB

Won James Won : Theorist Attack

Awesomely strange and oddly coherent genrebang sound collage from Russia; all over the place musically, from electronica and supersonic Slavic rap to death metal riffs to rock, pop and punk.

This release is from 2005 and no longer seems to be available, but you can get their other stuff here, or through their label.


THEORIST ATTACK

King Cannibal

Evil, dark beats. King Cannibal is a great name and this is a great release, if a bit outside of my usual bailiwick. Low and cold with lots of the tweaked menace I like from nasty ragga and jungle but without the spastic beats I like less.

LET THE NIGHT ROAR

Bacteria : Scum

2003 cd release from a band that has been a prolific presence on the Japanese underground scene since around since 1987 or so. They have a fair amount of releases, but most seem to have been on cassette (if my kind readers have mp3s of any of these I would love to get a hold of them). Their aesthetic is bleak and monochrome, with imagery sticking to tried and true dark forest/dead children/factory/graveyard stuff.

Madensuyu : Adjust We

From 2005, this was the first release by this difficult to pigeonhole, genre-bending Belgian duo (guitar/vocals/synth + drums/vocals). Interesting and catchy stuff.




P.S. Let me know if you agree that the vocal line on 'Share A Lot' sounds a whole lot like 'Smooth Criminal'.

V/A : Japanese Independent Music

Yet another comp of 90's Japanese underground stuff, mostly noise, electronics and psychedelia. Gaji & Ruins provide my two favorites off this comp, but there's a bunch of good stuff, with the notable exception of track 4, which made me want to punch hippies (my threshold for wanting to punch hippies is fairly low however, so you may not have the same problem).

This is probably the most experimental of the "experimental" comps I've posted so far and there is some odd and interesting music on here.
