DHR released (but nonetheless slow) german 'rap'/noisy electronics from '99. Weird fractured rhythms and odd FX (and surprisingly anticipatory of later grime stuff). Grew on me:

And here are one and a half excellent 7-inches from ORdER, of Japan's Aichi-ken. Their recently re-released full-length is solid, but their singles and splits my favorites. Space Junk from the Warhead (whose song is also good) split is an overdriven romp, while the Sex 7"'s songs are hookier, less distorted and include a slammin' Japanese language version of 'Stepping Stone'.

Awesomely strange and oddly coherent genrebang sound collage from Russia; all over the place musically, from electronica and supersonic Slavic rap to death metal riffs to rock, pop and punk.

This release is from 2005 and no longer seems to be available, but you can get their other stuff here, or through their label.

Just a quickie 7" here, released on Mangrove in 2002. Barebones don't get too fancy, just high-velocity high-energy rawk/punk done well. Fits right in with Greenmachine, rockin' Boris, Earth Blow, etc...

A while back I posted the lovely and awesome 1975 album 'Africa' by the Zambian band Amanaz; here are three more albums from some of their fuzzed-out compatriots. Though I don't find any of these quite as nice as Amanaz, they're all definitely worth a listen.

Somewhat better recording than the Chrissy Tembo album above (which I believe one of the members of The Witch participated in), this is in the same vein: fuzzy, loose, mostly mid-tempo jams.

A bit slower, more expansive and less cheery than the other two, the use of some non-english lyrics & the occasionally mournful tone bring to mind Amanaz more than the Chrissy or Witch albums do.

More Basque stuff here. This band is linked to Enoren Ero Ni and Bap!!. They put out three albums that I know of and this was their last, and in my opinion far and away their best. Precise, passionate, noise-rock and hardcore influenced rock.

Bap!! : Lehertzeko Garaia

Around since 1984, these guys were apparently pillars of the Basque hardcore scene (by the time of this release, in 1994, their sound had evolved to include a lot of rock elements. They're obviously a very passionate political band, but being ignorant of Basque, I can't tell you much beyond that...

Members went on to play in Inoren Ero Ni, who posted I a few days ago.


LEHERTZEKO GARAIA

Catchy, moody post-punk/rock from Basque country in Spain. Claiming inspiration from Fugazi, GVSB, and Captain Beefheart, this band contains members of the Basque hardcore band BAP(who I'll post soon). They are label-mates of the below-posted Lisabö and they're a bit like a more hook and tune-oriented version of that band. This s/t was released in 2004, and I believe they have a new album out now (which I can't find any way to purchase--help?). Anyway, I only ran across this recently, but am quite liking it--have a listen:

Dirty, noisy rawk band from Switzerland. Nice rowdy stuff.
Now defunct, they were active from 2001 - 2008, and released 3 full-lengths, the first of which is posted below.

Barebones : Ground

Barebones are best known in the west for their split with Boris. At that point in their career, Barebones were still largely a hardcore band, though in a similar progression to Boris's, they would move their sound in the direction of garage/psych/70's cock-rock a la some of Pink and Heavy Rocks(and in fact their excellent 2007 release, Back In Your Black, was produced by Atsuo).

Ground finds them midway through the transition, with a lot of rock elements in place, but still maintaining much of the volume and spastic intensity of their hardcore roots (somewhere between Stupid Babies Go Mad and Boris maybe.)

Cross : A Miles De Kilometros De Aca

Cool Uruguayan band I found through Mercenario's blog.

Cross played raw, simple punk/rawk/metal, hopping around between styles a bit. Nothing especially fancy here, but I really like something about the energy of this band. According to their bio, they were one of the first bands to emerge after the end of Uruguay's military dictatorship, and perhaps this is why they seem happy just to get a bit dirty and rock in a way that eludes more cynical & complacent first-world bands.

Listen to track 3, Crudo y Salvaje, and be convinced.




This came out in 1997, and was Cross's last release as a group, and first on Cd (though you-tube videos show that some re-formed version of the group has been active in recent years).


A MILES DE KILOMETROS DE ACA

1988 release. More weird rock, less noise this time around. The Boredoms reappear and K.K. Null shows up again, this time as part of Zeni Geva, his noise/rock project. Leningrad Blues Machine offers up an interesting chunk of psychedelic distortion, Junk Schizo brings some sludgy noise-rock, and Gerogerigegege &　Off Mask 00 fail miserably in combating unfair stereotypes of Japan perversion.
