This comp came out in '88 on Selfish and contains a good chunk of what was right with Japanese hardcore at the time. Death Side had awesome/utterly ridiculous hair (see below), SOB were not yet crappy, and while Crow hadn't quite evolved into the crusty smashing machine of later releases, they still played some good hardcore/punk as do all the bands on here.

A 1986 comp featuring various Japanese punk/metal heavyweights of the day; ranging from Casbah's stomping metal and City Indian's Lemmy worship to the raw hardcore of Lip Cream and Ghoul. This is a nice snapshot of the early Japanese heavy music scene and packed with bands which have influenced the sound of most of the Nipponese stuff posted on this blog (except for the Saber Tiger tracks which, like all other things X-Japan related, are incredibly fucking cheesy--I've just been never been able to enjoy castrato heavy metal vocals.)

3 compilations of Japanese noise and experimental rock from Charnel Records, released in '93, '97, and '99 respectively.

The main common denominator here is weirdness of one sort or another, with tempo, volume, instrumental selection and mood varying pretty widely.
There are probably some things on here you recognize and some you don't, and some things you'll like and some you won't (all of which is more or less the whole point of comps as far as I'm concerned).

Once again, a compilation, this time a collection of Japanese hc&metal bands from the no longer extant Howling Bull U.S. label.

Some excellent bands on here, though much of the material has been released elsewhere.

Hellchild and Force feature one of my favorite vocalists, Taiho(大砲) play some good noisy hardcore (and if anyone has any of their releases besides Chugalug, I'd be grateful), and the Garlic Boys have been around forever playing an asｓortment of punk styles. Nunchaku & United thug it up a little, Yellow Machinegun are a thrashy, all female metal band, Panorama Afro have a silly name and some reggae influence in their punk while Space Combine play some sort of messy rock.

Digital Catatroph 1997 Remixes & Originals

Another addition to the already numerous compilations of 90's Japanese underground music posted on this blog. This time we have ZK record's bands being remixed by DHR (digital hardcore) artists on one disc, and the original songs on another. The DHR remixes sound pretty much like you'd expect them to: like digital hardcore stuff, with varying degrees of the original's texture preserved. I'm mildly partial to the sound myself, especially when it comes without A. Empire's inane vocal stylings.

Released in '95, 7 years after volume II and on a different label(Charnel). This edition is almost entirely a rock compilation.

No Boredoms, but Ruins are back as are Zeni Geva.

Copass Grinderz, a band I rather like, have a good track of messy, hoarse vocaled rock (click their name in the tracklist for their full-length). Somewhat similar, but outside of this comp entirely mysterious to me, are Avalanch, who have two songs on here (not the spanish-language stoner band, mind), Funhouse and Ixa-wud.

Te No Kanshiyoku play some frantic, dissonant rock w/ piano, Daihakase provides a relaxing interlude ＋ Space Streakings are degenerate electronics-users.

1988 release. More weird rock, less noise this time around. The Boredoms reappear and K.K. Null shows up again, this time as part of Zeni Geva, his noise/rock project. Leningrad Blues Machine offers up an interesting chunk of psychedelic distortion, Junk Schizo brings some sludgy noise-rock, and Gerogerigegege &　Off Mask 00 fail miserably in combating unfair stereotypes of Japan perversion.

1986 release. This was a compilation of experimental Japanese rock and noise put out on German label Dossier. The ubiquitous K.K. Null makes an appearance with a noise track, and the Boredoms perform as a duo while Ruins do their whacky, also 2-man thing. The other artists are less familiar, but the first three give you an idea of the ballpark they're in.

Dead Tech : No Wave From Japan

V.A. : Life conception

Released in 2008 on MCR, this is a compilation of bands, ranging from relative newcomers to twenty-year vets, from Nagoya and surrounding environs. The emphasis is on hardcore with varying degrees of punk and metal mixed in, the main exception being the offerings from Eternal Elysium(who are long-time mainstays of Nagoya's heavy music scene) their stoner/doom/heavy psych track, 'agent of doom', is awesome despite being somewhat out of place. Other bands include Disgust(black&thrashy), Strike Out(trad hardcore), the Genbaku Onannis(old-school punks) and several others.

Nagoya has a reputation as having the best hardcore scene in Japan (confession- I lived in Tokyo for years and through a combination of overwork, laziness and bigger city snobbery never got around to checking out the many great music scenes in other parts of the country; shame on me), and there are 11 bands doing twenty-two songs on here, so there's probably something for most people (or at least those who have the good sense to enjoy some of the same things as me).

I'm very surprised at how much I've been listening to Acute, who contribute the first two songs on this album. They play raging, intense hardcore, my liking of which is entirely unsurprising, but the vocals are sung mostly by a girl, something which as a bigot I don't usually go for(I'll post their release from a few years back soon).
