Well, I suppose an imitation messiah is better than having none at all.

I posted this back on the good ship Lucid before it sank, and though it's easily available elsewhere on the interwebs (and in stores, even: buy it), I'm posting it again. This is album is superlative, love this if you love heavy and original music. Intricate, anarchic and abrasive but methodical and with weird hints of beauty; full-blown madness on a tight leash.

Awesomely strange and oddly coherent genrebang sound collage from Russia; all over the place musically, from electronica and supersonic Slavic rap to death metal riffs to rock, pop and punk.

This release is from 2005 and no longer seems to be available, but you can get their other stuff here, or through their label.

Crow are a heavy metallic crusty smashing machine; they've been at it since days of yore and have only gotten better. I'm posting their Bloody Tear release for two reasons even though it's been about the internets.

I. I like it a lot, and if I didn't post stuff I like a lot, then what would be the point of all this anyhow?

II. All the digital permutations I've seen of this have been horribly tagged; multiple tracks called Japanese Title, no track numbers etc... Anyway, this is a rip of the CD release on Mangrove, and I've tagged all the tracks with their Japanese name, transliterated name, and translated name.

In any case, Crow are sick. Download this now if you don't have it.

Zambian Fuzz

A while back I posted the lovely and awesome 1975 album 'Africa' by the Zambian band Amanaz; here are three more albums from some of their fuzzed-out compatriots. Though I don't find any of these quite as nice as Amanaz, they're all definitely worth a listen.

Somewhat better recording than the Chrissy Tembo album above (which I believe one of the members of The Witch participated in), this is in the same vein: fuzzy, loose, mostly mid-tempo jams.

A bit slower, more expansive and less cheery than the other two, the use of some non-english lyrics & the occasionally mournful tone bring to mind Amanaz more than the Chrissy or Witch albums do.

Kruger : Redemption Through Looseness

Because my blog should contain things I love.
This album is pummeling, precise, technical, menacing and laced with the right amounts of hooks. Kruger's first two are good but this one is straight excellence.

REDEMPTION THROUGH LOOSENESS

Amanaz : Africa

Zambia, 1975, a bunch of stoned as fuck fellows weaned on pirate radio record an album of late 60s style psyche. The results are unsurprisingly (surprisingly?)　great. Very chilled out music, with lovely rhythmic and regional touches that set it off from most psych stuff. The songs are kept short and sweet, and are mostly sung in English, with a few others in whatever the bands native tongue is. Unfortunately I know very little else about this release, including where I got it in the first place (thanks somebody probably found it on the always excellent Cosmic Hearse).

Anyway, it's really nice stuff, sad and serious but still uplifting, chilled and smooth. If 'Khala My Friend' doesn't warm your heart & bring a tear to your eye then I just don't know what to tell you.

UPDATE: So, it seems the above link was to a version of this album which had been ripped TOO SLOW (I though it was intentional, in order to make things more psychedelic and weird), anyway, with thanks to the Sludge Swamp dude who posted this, here's a cd rip at the correct and faster speed. (Though I've got to admit I'm still attached to the slowed-down versions.)

First off, let's get one thing clear: Conan the Barbarian is a great movie, not least because it contains moments like this:

Schwarzenegger is at the height of his powers in the role he was born to play [except for Predator and Total Recall everything since has been superfluous], the script is by Oliver Stone, and Basil Pouledouis's soundtrack is excellent:

Beyond Conan's cinematic triumph, the original books by Robert Howard rank as some of the most important works of early fantastic literature, and the comics by Barry Windsor-Smith are classics in their own right.



From this proud tradition come Crom, and Hot Sumerian Nights, an album-length tribute to metal, punk & the great barbarian, a collage of sometimes borrowed riffs + barrages of thrash, grind and sludge weaved into very extensive samples from the movie,its soundtrack and am radio.

Needless to say I enjoyed the album, and you should too:
